Why take Probiotics?
There is a massive amount of research showing how crucial the bacteria that live inside us are in regulating our health, and how much damage it can do to suddenly wipe them out with an antibiotic. So it shouldn’t be a surprise when you have a course of antibiotics, taking a pro biotic to replace the missing bacteria in your gut is a good idea.
Are all probiotics the same?
Probiotics aren’t a digestive cure-all. If you are looking at helping irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) for example, then acidophilis is not enough. You need specific strains. L-plantarium is proven to be effective in cases of IBS. Like most other supplements that are actually effective, they’re useful in very specific circumstances. It’s not necessary to continually take probiotics on a daily basis but it can be beneficial depending on the brand, strength and strain.
Recent study on Probiotics
In 2012, a meta-analysis of 82 randomized controlled trials found that use of probiotics (most of which contained bacteria from the Lactobacillus genus, naturally present in the gastrointestinal tract) significantly reduced the incidence of diarrhoea after a course of antibiotics.
So you just need to find the right strain for you.
